Dream as a Narrative Strategy in Selected Classical Malay Texts

This paper discusses dream as a narrative strategy in selected classical Malay texts. The discussion covers six historiographical texts: Sulalatus Salatin, Hikayat Raja-raja Pasai, Banjar, Tuhfat Al-Nafis, Babad Tanah Jawa and Syair Peperangan Aceh. Mieke Bal's theory (2017) is used the main method of discussion. In her book, Narratology: Introduction to Theory Narrative (2017), Bal presents 12 important characteristics theory; event, character, time, location, plot, repetition, focalization, text, author, description, stages ideology. Based on analysis, can be condensed into five categories: text (theme, point view, stages, focalization), setting (time, place, event), ideology character. However, this uses one element only, which author's findings intend show using strategies highlight sovereignty veneration kings. study's results prove that was by past royal court authors.
